John
Hergert
December 9, 1943 – January 15, 2026
John Hergert, beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away January 15th while residing at St Josephs Nursing Home in Woodbridge.
John was the son of the late Louis and Emilie Hergert and the ninth of their 10 children. He grew up in a tight knit family where music always filled the home. John devoted more than 30 years to the City of Linden, working with Linden Public Works as a maintenance technician.
In addition to his career, John was a proud member of the Happiness Club and devoted much of his time to his parish, St Elizabeth of Hungary where he served as an usher.
Upon his retirement, John moved to Waretown, New Jersey, to the cherished family summer home his parents built on the Barnegat Bay.
There he spent the last 20 years of his life enjoying the simple pleasures he loved most — boating, fishing, and biking through town- where he was a familiar and friendly presence known by many. He especially treasured the camaraderie and friendships formed at Spencer's Marina, where he spent many happy days among friends.
A talented musician, John was an accomplished drummer for many years. He was a weekly participant at the Albert Music Hall in Waretown, generously sharing his love of music with fellow musicians and audiences alike. John continued to serve his faith community as both a musician in the Praise Band and an usher at St. Pius Church in Forked River.
John will be remembered for his warm sense of humor, love of music and especially his deep appreciation for fishing and time spent on the water. He formed many meaningful connections throughout his life and never forgot the people he met. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
John is survived by the following siblings:
Myles (late Marion). Bernadette Gross (late Arthur). Emilie Ahearn (late Edward), Louis (Geraldine), Elizabeth Simonelli (Salvatore) , Raymond (Susan)
And he is predeceased by his siblings Joan and John Sanford, Lois and John Maleckar, Mary and Leroy Henry
