Obituary

John J. Langan passed peacefully away on January 1 2024 after a brief illness.  John is survived by his true other half and best friend, his wife of 64 years, Nancy (O'Sullivan) His children John (Cassie), Mary Jean Bianchini (Mario), Betsy Maloney and Thomas (Susan) are grateful for having grown up being "John Langan's kid!"  He was a father of the 90's in the 1970s and was in charge of dinner when Nancy was working in the Emergency Room.  He made everything A La Daddy.  His secret recipe was put a slice of cheese on it, stick in the broiler and dinner was ready!  He was predeceased by his beloved parents John and Veronica (Joyce) and his dear sister Patsy (Mucha-Duesche)

His grandchildren John C Langan (Ashley), Genny Langan, Mario, Anthony and Elizabeth Bianchini (Brian), Megan and Andrew Maloney Moira Maloney-Gassenmeyer (Tara), Jack and Brian Langan and his great grandchildren Conor and Molly Langan adored their PopPop.  He was their baseball encyclopedia, their best cheerleader and gave the best hugs ever!  His nieces and nephews and their children knew how very much he loved and appreciated them and thoroughly enjoyed watching them raise their own children.

John lived a life of clear and guiding principle.  He loved his God, he loved his wife and he loved his family.  Every single day was lived in service to create a more beautiful, peaceful, just world.  His second home through much of the 1970's and 1980's was at St John the Apostle.  From making banners for a guitar mass to the Parish Council to the St Vincent DePaul Society John lived his faith.  He was active in the Cursillo Movement, worked at the Bowery Mission, he fed the poor, he brought the Eucharist to the infirm and he sought first to see goodness in every person he met.

John started his service with Union County in the Sherrif's Department.  He retired a Captain of Detectives from the Prosecutors Office.  Captain Langan was both respected and beloved by his colleagues for whom the feeling was mutual.  From the Shade Tree Commission, the Historical Society, his beloved Baseball Commission John was committed to service.  As a proud Irishman, the son of a railroader and a beloved public school teacher, he found great joy in the Emerald Society and the Friendly Sons of St Patrick.  It was his pleasure to be a part of the Parade Committee and his true honor to serve as it's Grand Marshall in 2003.

John Langan was a man like no other.  He was as comfortable talking baseball or Philosophy.  He would sit on the patio and share a cold beer with a neighbor or sip a fine wine on the QEII and be equally at ease.   He loved the theater.  He loved performing at St John's.  He loved the Hudson Guild off Broadway.  Rather than rent a beach house John and Nancy took their family to see Richard Buton in Camelot  opening night at Lincoln Center. He loved art and big cities and small towns and foreign lands and he loved going all those places with his wife.  He was an avid reader and would read poetry at the dinner table to his children.  Later, after he retired, he began writing Poetry during his long walks along the river and around the park.  He appreciated everything.  He laughed easily and joyfully.  He angered slowly, forgave quickly and above all things he prayed.  He prayed every morning with Nancy.  The family held hands and prayed every night before dinner.  He prayed as he walked and today I am quick confident that as he walked into his Father's House all the Angels in Heaven cheered and said Hi John, welcome home.
