Obituary

Louise Haynes Ballard lived a life rooted in faith, education, family, and service. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, educator, and servant of God, she believed deeply in the importance of learning, community, and caring for others.

Born on June 26, 1943, to John H. Webb and Mary Rooks Haynes, Louise was lovingly raised by her grandmother and her aunts, Lillie, Rosalie and Nadine Webb, whose guidance, care, and influence helped shape the woman she would become. She was one of fourteen children and was preceded in death by several of her beloved brothers and sisters.

Louise was educated in the Newark Public School system and graduated from South Side High School, now known as Malcolm X Shabazz High School. She continued her education at Jersey City State Teachers College, now New Jersey City University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education and her teaching certification for grades K–8. A lifelong learner, she later earned a Master’s Degree in Sociology from William Paterson University.

With a genuine love for children, Louise devoted more than 30 years to the Newark Public School system as a Primary schoolteacher. For generations of young students, she was among their first introductions to the classroom and the joy of learning. She brought patience, encouragement, and compassion to her work, helping to build the educational foundation for countless Newark children. Teaching was more than her profession; it was part of who she was.

In 1964, Louise married the love of her life, Henry “Hank” Ballard. This began a loving partnership and marriage that endured until Henry’s passing.

Louise’s unwavering faith was at the center of her life. Raised in Phillips Metropolitan Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, she faithfully served her church through numerous ministries, including Vacation Bible School, the Lay Council, Pastor’s Aid, Willing Workers, Noonday Bible Study Class, Board of Christian Education, Steward Board, Missionary Board, and Women’s Missionary Council, her love of children and teaching naturally extended into her service through Christian education and Vacation Bible School.

Her commitment to others reached beyond her church. Louise was active with the League of Women Voters and Church Women United and was a proud and honored member of the NAACP. Her life reflected a lasting commitment to faith, education, civic engagement, and the advancement of her community.

Louise also knew how to enjoy life. She loved shopping, traveling, teaching, dancing, watching television and movies, and spending time with the people she loved.

On August 20, 2026, Louise completed her earthly journey at the age of 83, leaving behind a life and legacy that touched generations.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Henry “Hank” Ballard, and her son, Michael M. Ballard. She leaves to cherish her memory her son, Anthony Ballard Sr. (Lavett), and her loving grandchildren, Rashad Irby, Michael L. Ballard, Tiffany Jackson (Christian), Lamanda, Keenan Ore, Anthony II, and Jeremiah Ballard. Her legacy continues through her six great-grandchildren, Darrel Jr., Taki, Kamaya, Christopher, Teshon, and Alannah, and her two great-great-grandchildren, King and True Swope.

Louise is also survived by her sister, Barbara Johnson and Sister-in-law Jacqueline Williams. She held especially close to her heart her longtime friend Rosalia Clegg and beloved daughter Tracy Heath. She will be lovingly remembered by extended family, a host of cousins, extended family, former students, church family, and dear friends.

Louise Haynes Ballard lived a life of purpose. For more than three decades, she nurtured and educated Newark’s youngest students. She served her church, strengthened her community, cherished her family, and walked faithfully with God.

Her lessons remain in the children she taught. Her faith remains in those she encouraged. Her service remains in the community she strengthened. And her love remains in the generations who will carry her memory forward.
