Susan
Shubeck
May 22, 1962 – September 27, 2022
Susan "Sue" Ainge Shubeck, 60, of Linden, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 27, 2022, surrounded by her loving family. Sue was the beloved wife of 38 years to Michael S. Shubeck and the loving mother of Kristen S. LaForge (husband Geoff, their daughter Genevieve) and Matthew J. Shubeck (wife Taylor Carden, their son Archer). She cared deeply for many family members, including, but not limited to: her brother Matthew Ainge, his wife Jean Bonnie, and their children Tyler (wife Hannah) and Kelsey; her brother Michael Ainge (wife Lynne, their sons Zander, Nate, and Sebi); her brother-in-law Christopher Shubeck; her sister-in-law Theresa Shubeck her daughter Claire Shubeck); and many surviving and predeceased aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Sue was born in Elizabeth on May 22, 1962, to the late Jack Ainge and Margaret Thorn Ainge. She was the salutatorian of the class of 1980 for Elizabeth High School where she met her high school sweetheart and future husband, Mike. They were married on September 8, 1984, and moved to Linden in 1990.
Sue graduated from Cook College (Rutgers University) in 1984 with a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology. After graduation, she worked for many years as an environmental scientist with a focus on plume dispersion modeling for electric power plants, paper mills, and steel mills throughout the United States. She then had a career change to achieve a better work-life balance and stepped into her new role as an office manager at CWA Local 1000 in Cranford, NJ 25 years ago. In this role, she supported employee/union relations, office administration, and refined her ability to always see the best in people and help others.
Sue was a lifetime parishioner of The Episcopal Church of St. John the Baptist (formerly Grace Episcopal Church) in Linden, where she was a member of the Altar Guild and choir, as well as a lay reader, eucharistic minister, vestry member, and served many terms as the Senior Warden of the church. She was also a deputy to Diocesan Conventions and a member of the Steering Committee on Discerning Our Common Call for the Diocese of New Jersey.
Sue's devotion to her family extended to becoming actively involved in her children's interests. She served as a band parent for 8 years for the Linden High School marching band, chaperoned many events and trips, and assisted with the Linden High School theater productions. The Shubeck family also shared a love of the theater. With Mike, Kristen, and Matt, she was an active member of Mystic Vision Players both on stage and behind the scenes. She was a member and past president of Mystic Vision Players Board of Directors.
Sue had a deep connection with the ocean and called Cape May her home away from home. She and Mike would often take day trips to Sandy Hook just so that she could dip her toes in the water. She worked hard to improve her vast wealth of "useless bits of knowledge" through daily crossword puzzles and consistently winning family trivia games. As a true testament to her unwavering loyalty, she was an avid Mets fan, regardless of their performance.
With Mike, she enjoyed going out to dinner, attending shows at the Paper Mill Playhouse, traveling, bowling, bike riding, and attending Somerset Patriots baseball games. Both Mike and Sue enjoyed hosting many gatherings with family and friends in their backyard oasis. These gatherings often lasted far into the night or early morning. Her desire was to enjoy every day as if it was a Friday and to make every day special.
All are welcome to attend the Memorial Visitation which will be held at The Episcopal Church of St. John the Baptist at 2018 Dewitt Terrace, Linden, on Friday, September 30th from 4 pm–8 pm. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, October 1st at 10 am in the church following a Memorial Visitation from 9 am–10 am with a celebration afterward in the parish hall of the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory to The Episcopal Church of St. John the Baptist, 2018 Dewitt Terrace, Linden, NJ, 07036 are appreciated.
